Nine circles of Hell

 Nine circles of Hell

Inferno is an epic Divine comedy, written by the 14th-century Italian writer Dante. The book describes Dante's journey through hell, guided by the Roman poet Virgil. Hell is depicted as nine concentric circles of torture and punishment, located within the Earth. The circles gradually increase in wickedness and at the bottom lies Satan. The sinners of each circle are punished for eternity according to their crimes.

1. First Circle (Limbo)

The first circle contains the unbaptised and virtuous people who did not believe the Christ. Without baptism, they wanted the hope for something greater than rational minds can conceive.

2. Second Circle(Lust)

This circle is ruled by the entity named Minos, who judges and sentences each soul to its torment by wrapping his tail around himself several times. In this circle, souls are buffeted back and forth by the strong winds of a violent storm without rest.

3. Third Circle (Gluttony)

Cerebus, the three-headed beast rules this sphere of torment where souls or gluttons lie in the freezing mud. The gluttons grovel in the mud, sightless and heedless of their neighbours, which symbolises the cold and selfishness of their lives.

4. Fourth circle(Greed)

The fourth circle is guarded by a deity named Plutus. It contains those spirits which only wanted material goods and possessions. It includes the souls of the pope, clergymen and cardinals.

5. Fifth Circle (Wrath)

In this circle, the souls fight each other vigorously in the stinking water of the river Styx. Here Dante is terrified by the Furies and Medusa. An angel touches and rebukes them for Dante.

6. Sixth Circle (Heresy)

In this sixth circle, Heretics and their followers were trapped in firing tombs, where they were tortured for eternity

7. Seventh Circle (Violence)

In this circle, the murderers, plunderers and tyrants were submerged in a river of boiling blood and fire. Creatures like Centaurs shoot arrows into any sinners who emerge higher out of the boiling blood.

8. Eighth Circle (Fraud)

The eighth circle is a large funnel of stone around which runs a series of ten deep, narrow concentric ditches called bulges. Within these ditches, those were punished who were guilty of fraud.

9. Ninth Circle (Treachery)

At the base of the well, Dante finds himself within a large frozen lake Cocytus. Imprisoned in the ice, each according to his guilty punished by culprits against whom they had special relationships.
