Darkest Corners---part 1

1. Paper secrets

Regina woke up early today, her hair was crumbled, and her nightdress was wet due to the tremendous sweat, she was tired and hungry. After the late-night parties and drinks, she really couldn’t sleep properly, her eyes were still heavy and her legs were tired. Somehow she managed to get out of her bed. She went downstairs to make a cup of coffee for herself. While she was making the coffee, her glance fell upon the newspaper. It said,” BREAKING NEWS: STAR CORP. IS GOING TO TEST THEIR NEW NUCLEAR FUSIONISER; ‘A SMALL STEP FOR US’SAYS CEO Barrett”. She stood still for a second, and then she went for her cell phone, leaving her coffee behind. She dialled a number but the person was too busy to pick up the phone. “Smartass!” she told herself and went to the kitchen to pick up her coffee. She took out a leftover chocolate cookie and sat on the corner of her sofa, with the breakfast.

She started scrolling her phone and sipping her coffee. Everywhere there is news of the so-called “Nuclear Fusioniser”, people were actively talking about it, interviews were taken, questions were asked, and doubts were answered. Some people are even making memes and trolling the Star corp. leaders. But all these things failed to put a smile on Regina’s face. She looked confused as if everything is going above her head. All those years of hard work are in vain, she couldn’t do anything, and everything is over for her time. She rushed to her room and opened her closet door. She took out a bunch of papers from there and placed them inside a black box. She sealed the top of the box tightly with duct tape and took it to the basement. She paced the box in the stainless steel locker, with a “Z” printed on the top. After she had placed the papers in the locker, she scribbled some numbers on a piece of paper and dropped them inside the locker. Then she closed the locker and threw the key to a safe place. After few moments, she had knockings on the door, which soon turned to loud banging. She locked her basement door from inside. Soon, there was a loud noise: someone had broken the door. She had footsteps of people, coming towards the basement, they were coming for her. She couldn’t bear it anymore, she had lost her faith in Markus, and she knows what is going to happen. Finally, she pulled out her father’s revolver; she cried out slowly.” God’s in His heaven— All’s right with the world!” and pulled the trigger.
