 Darkest Corners---part 1

5. Monster ahead

Barrett woke up with a jolt. He was sitting straight on the bed, sweating profusely. He rubbed his eyes and cleared his mind. "Nightmares again?" said Angela, his wife who had already woke up before him. She was standing in front of the tinted window, looking outside for a bird. "I guess, those nightmares will not return if I go to sleep again", Barett said, with a smile on his face. Angela smiled and came up to him. She sat beside his dear husband and hugged him tightly," don't worry those things will never come back". Barrett closed his eyes and tried to sleep in the warm arms of Angela. "By the way, how the work is going on in the industry?" she asked him. Without looking at her, Barrett replied," Pretty well honey!". "Oh, I remember, I have to go to work early today- we have to test the nuclear fusioniser today for the first time". Angela gently rubbed his head and said" it will be a great success don't worry". 

After having breakfast and bidding goodbye to Angela; Sirus Barett, the chief supervisor and head of the department of radiology, set out for Star Corporation. It was a big day for him, as all his dreams will come true today. On entering the Corporation facility, he saw a large group of reporters waiting for him at the main gate. After answering few questions, he entered the building. There were lots of people, comprising of engineers, scientists, doctors, radiologists, technicians etc. He entered his room where he found his secretary Miss Sara waiting for him. "Morning Mr. Barrett, nuclear fusioniser is ready for its first test". " All protocols are working smoothly?." Barnett asked her, "Yes sir we are ready for it". "Good! This new invention will create endless opportunities in front of us and will open a new chapter in particle physics". " For sure sir!" Sara said, happily. 

They both started walking towards the new lab. Meanwhile, Barett asked Sara something different," So how was your date with Richard?" Sara was shocked to hear that. "How do you know about it? Did he...." Richard smiled and said," Yes Richard told me about it. Well, I think it didn't go well with that stupid person". Sara was quiet for a while but she said," I gave him another chance Mr Barrett but he is too stubborn to accept it, I mean what is wrong with me? Am I not good enough for him?" Barrett listened to her and said, "Look Sara I think you don't deserve him, he is better alone than with you. But, why don't you try with Martin?" Sara said," Our Martin? He is so shy and he barely talks to girls" she giggled a bit. Barrett continued," but he is a nice and well-behaved guy, not like Richard and certainly know how to impress someone". Sara said," I will try with him, maybe he will be good for me, by the way, how is Angela?" Barrett said," She is doing fine, she will visit her grandmother next week for a change". Sara was happy to hear that, she knows Angela has gone through a lot of trouble and certainly deserves a second chance. 

They reached the main lab where they saw white fumes of smoke coming out from the door. They rushed inside and found the lab was in a mess. All the windows were broken, equipment was destroyed, chemicals were spilt all over the floor and few scientists were injured. "What the hell has happened here?" Barrett shouted. No one tried to answer him. Barrett shouted again and this time a young scientist said," Sir, subject 117 has escaped his cage door and he probably roaming in the woods, it was already killed 12 people and we don't know what to do next!" Barnett couldn't say anything, at last, his dream is coming true...
